March 2025 Newsletter

Let’s talk about celebrities and psychedelics.

In our previous email, we asked for your predicitions about psychedelics in 2025. Almost everyone who replied showed optimism about the prospect of greater psychedelic acceptance this year.

While scientific progress undoubtedly forms the backbone of this acceptance, celebrities and influencers have played a strong part in shifting perceptions and bringing psychedelics into the mainstream.

In this month’s newsletter, we ask our Executive Director for his thoughts on celebrities and influencers in the psychedelic space. As well, keep reading to learn about our recent studies and how you can get 50 free business cards for our newly improved Info Line!

Matt’s Take

Matthew X. Lowe, Executive Director

In 2025, I believe we will see increased medicalization of psychedelics, expanded clinical trials, and legislative reform in the United States. As research broadens our understanding of the therapeutic impact of substances such as psilocybin, we will see more countries approve the therapeutic use of psychedelics such as psilocybin to treat mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety and PTSD. During this time, clinical trial research will likely expand to lesser known conditions, such as chronic pain, OCD, and eating disorders. In the US, with mainstream integration of psychedelics with therapeutic programs in states such as Oregon and Colorado, we will also likely see psychedelic-assisted therapy move further into the mainstream zeitgeist with more training programs emerging for mental health professionals. Finally, as demand for legislative reform and psychedelic use increases, we will see a strong need for naturalistic, or observational, research aimed to understand real-world psychedelic use in the broader population and outside of the controlled settings observed in clinical research.

Shame and Guilt

Celebrities have been open about the ways psychedelics have helped them process shame and guilt, like Aaron Rodgers, who credits psychedelics for helping him break free of these feelings that had long controlled him.

Just featured in DoubleBlind’s The Drop In, we recently published a paper that found that feelings of shame and guilt during psilocybin experiences are common, affecting nearly 70% of users. However, the ability to process these emotions during a trip is linked to increased well-being afterward. While psilocybin use was associated with a reduction in long-term shame, some individuals experienced increases, highlighting the need for proper support.

How have psychedelics helped you?

We know that various psychedelics are being used in clinical trials to treat a wide range of conditions. However, we’re interested in what effects you’ve experienced. Did psychedelics help you process feelings of shame and guilt like Aaron Rodgers? Or perhaps you felt a strong increase in overall mood? Whatever it may be, we want to know!

New Study: 70% Reduction in Seizures

Unlimited Sciences just completed a study on Reishi and Lion’s Mane mushrooms as complementary treatments for epilepsy, particularly in individuals with drug-resistant cases. Among 20 participants, 70% reported reduced seizure frequency or severity, along with cognitive and quality-of-life improvements. These results will soon be published!
